Single parent Therese Wolley works hard to support her two daughters financially and emotionally. Older daughter Matlida sometimes suffers from nightmares, and young Franny intereprets her world from autistic perspective, eneveloping herself in letters But an item in the newspaper and an obligation to fulfill a promise abruptly alters the family dynamics. Therese packs the girls in her car and drives to her friend Leah's home, which Franny thinks "smells like art." The next day, Leah takes Franny on an outing, and Franny returns to discover her world is totally unbalanced. Therese and Matilda are gone, although her sister leaves behind a journal and a promise to return for her. Franny doesn't understand her abandonment, but in many ways, she copes with the changes in her life in healthier ways than her sibling, her mother and guardian. Leah buries her demons until Franny innocently uncovers them while asking about pieces of artwork she finds under a mattress. Meanwhile, Matilda and her mother by allying herself with a neighborhood bad boy, skipping school, sneaking out of the house and drinking. Therese stubbornly refuses to supply satisfactory answers to Matilda's questions, and she spends more time away from home as she worries that the past will come back to haunt her and her daughter. Although it does not have the strongest plot or ending. Janet Catherine Berlo is Professor of Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. She has taught Native American art history as a visiting professor at Harvard, Yale, and UCLA, and has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Getty Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ruth B. Phillips is Canada Research Chair and Professor of Art History at Carleton University in Ottawa. She has served as director of the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology and as president of Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art (CIHA), UNESCO's world art history organization. Chapter 5 discusses design trade-offs and new techniques in LC oscillator design that allows optimal design. Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 discuss a topic that is typically ignored in oscillator design. The Designer's Guide to High-Purity Oscillators presents a comprehensive theory and design methodology for the design of LC CMOS oscillators used in every wireless transmission system.  The authors introduce the subject of phase noise and osciallators from the very first principles, and carry the reader to a very intuitive circuit-driven theory of phase noise in LC osciallators.  The presented theory includes both thermal and flicker noise effects.  Based on Hegazi, Rael, and Abidi's mechanistic theory, a sensible design methodology is gradually developed.  In addition, new topologies that were recently published by the authors are discussed in detail and an optimal design methodology is presented.  While the book focuses on intuition, it rigorously proves every argument to present a compact yet accurate model for predicting phase noise in LC oscillators.  By so doing, the design of an LC osciallator can be handled in the same manner as an amplifier design.
